A stuck underground train, on the other hand, traps folk inside and forces them to wait for help.<\/p>\n<p>Ditto for escalators and lifts. A broken escalator is just a technobrutalist staircase.<\/p>\n<p>An ATM that requires inserting a card makes it too easy to forget it there. Such an ATM can also take the card away in case of a bug, has a place to attach a skimming device, and wastes folk’s time by forcing them to fiddle with things. An ATM that scans cards contactlessly has none of these issues.<\/p>\n<!-- bank -->",

            "content_html": "<p>There’s this two-floor building which I often visit with an elevator interface that is way too complex:<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/robert.uber.space\/blog\/pictures\/1*OP1lCMsz-4HX8ulHsXutbg-1.jpeg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>Seriously, why does it need five buttons?<\/p>\n<p>First of all, the “Close doors” button is a lie. It is also unnecessary to have two buttons to choose from when there’s only one way to go.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/robert.uber.space\/blog\/pictures\/1*p-oGCH6gBB1d8ViZDWr1AA-1.jpeg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>The useful action must take up more area than the extras:<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/robert.uber.space\/blog\/pictures\/1*PVTPMjppOZkh5B8CWV-0cQ-1.png\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>But that’s still not enough. The elevator has a scale built in, so it won’t go when too crowded. This scale can be used for another feature, human presence detection. As soon as the elevator detects that weight isn’t changing, it shuts the doors and goes. A screen can be used to make the elevator more informative.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/robert.uber.space\/blog\/pictures\/1*g0Lsc6usFnw19t5i3xDVmQ-1.png\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>Therefore, the only buttons needed in an elevator are those for emergencies like getting stuck inside or in-between the doors.<\/p>\n<p>The only problem that remains is the waste of time that the elevator is. Sure, you save time and energy by using it instead of a staircase, but the ride could be much more pleasant. A 10-second cat video will solve everything.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/robert.uber.space\/blog\/pictures\/1*56t16jzrlddKx7XYAGC9fw-1.png\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<div class=\"e2-text-caption\">The video is silent, quite obviously<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A game show would be even better, but the journey here is way too short for that.<\/p>\n",
